Mobile Core i5 vs Core i3

Posted: 31 Aug 2010 07:44 AM PDT

The core i3 and the core i5 mobile processors have now flooded the laptop market, with the core i3m being entry level, core i5m being mid range and the core i7m being high end processors. We all know how fast their desktop counterparts are, but these mobile versions equally impressive? If you ask me, I don’t think so.

The first time I got my hands on one of these was on my friends XPS 16, which had a core i7 , and frankly i was not at all impressed. But that had a different issue, will not get into that, lets talk about the other series, the Core i5m and Core i3m, which is what most of the people buy as it is much more affordable than the i7s.

Both the core i3m and i5m processors are 32nm processors and have a TDP of 35W ( TDP – Thermal design power), which is a bit high as the older processors had a lower TDP of 25W. The reason for this is that the processor has an IGP on the same chip. This IGP is better than older Intel GMA and all those IGPs, but not good for heavy duty gaming.

Both the Core i3m and core i5m have an integrated memory controller (IMC) and use DDR3 memory. Both support Dual channel memory , so you will generally get it with 4GB of DDR3 memory.

Now, the both the core i3m and core i5m processors are Dual core processors with hyper threading, so both have 2 cores and 4 threads. The core i3m processors have a lower clock speed than the core i5m processors, but there is not a huge difference, performance wise.

The core i5m processors come with another feature called Turbo boost, which increases the clock speed of active cores when other cores are inactive. So whats the benefit? Its a total waste when we consider dual core processors as almost all applications utilize 2 cores at least, the benefits are only seen in quad cores. So again, another feature on the core i5m processors that has no real benefit.

The Core i3m has 3MB of shared L3 cache and the Core i5m has 4MB of shared L3 cache, which makes no real world difference anyways. So again, no real advantage with the Core i5m.

So the bottom line is that the premium price paid for a Core i5m processor over a core i3m is really not that useful when it comes to performance,so choose wisely.

I hope you find the above article helpful, if you have any questions, please do leave a comment here and I will do my best to help you out.

Nokia C5 Review: Light Weight Gadget

Posted: 30 Aug 2010 06:52 AM PDT

Nokia C5 Review:

A model of the C-series of the Nokia mobiles, Nokia C5 is a good looking phone that has a 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, GPS, social networking, media player, Radio, and a good keyboard. It does not support Wi-Fi but is still an impressive phone.

Design

  • The built of the phone is such that the body is mostly constructed of metal parts and it stands 112 mm tall, with the width of 46mm and 12.3mm thick. Weighing around 89 grams, even the weight is something that we appreciate. In addition to this, the phone supports a 2.2 inch of QVGA display that has a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels and supports over 15 million colors. Even though the image quality is almost average, just like most of mobile phones under this price range, one can say that this is what the price of the phone has to offer. The buttons of the phone are large and easily type-able and this is a plus point on the whole.

Nokia C5
Camera

  • Similar to the camera of 5630 XpressMusic, C5 has a 3.2 megapixel camera that has the features of focusing full and comes with a flash as well. It include a 4x zoom interface, a panorama mode, manual exposure, color tones, scene modes, photo and video editor, removing red eyes, white balance and light sensitivity modes as well. It has the capability of shooting 640×480 pixel video at 15fps. The image of the phone is pretty good as it is, bright and loaded with detail. However, the flash does not allow you to take good pictures in darkness. You can find a 50MB internal memory with an option of having a 16GB memory card. In this age of revolution, those mobile phones which are equipped with high tech and high resolution cameras are sold like hot cakes.

Multimedia Qualities

  • You even have a music player in this phone that supports all types of video and audio formats and there is also a built in equalizer that gives a boost to the sound effects of the phone. In addition, you can easily access the FM radio and even the quality of sound in headphones as well as loudspeaker is clear and satisfactory.
  • Other applications in the phone include a calendar, To-do list, timer, mobile search, note pad, currency converter, world clock, voice recorder, 1000 entry phonebook, flight book, MMS, SMS, voice command etc. You can even customize your wallpapers, widgets, alerts, screen savers etc. All of these options including a number of more are found in this C5 mobile phone.

Storage

  • The Nokia C5 has a 600 MHz processor and 128 MB that is considered more than enough in a Smartphone that carries out all the required functions with ease. You can even make and receive calls with comfort as the quality is good and even though there may be a few issues with the sharpness of sound, it is a set that is considered average at the price that it comes.
  • Therefore, to conclude, this phone is for those who believe in paying for the required services. The more you pay, the higher quality you get and vice versa. Therefore, this phone is a perfect package for the amount of money that it comes at

Other Specifications:

Below is the list of core specifications, which one might want to know before they get set to store to buy one. C5 comes with standard Li-Ion battery, which has become pretty much a standard for every other phone, even though the phone is small, yet it gives you a massive talk time of 12 hours on 2G handsets and approximately 5 hours on 3G sets. However, the standby time is ridiculously massive, you can keep it un charged for up to 630 hours on 2g sets and 670 hours on 3g networks.

This gadget, which comes with Symbian 9.3 S60 3.2 rel, allows you to have the ability to SMS/MMS/Email and IM, it shall also give you the liberty to view your documents in Word, Excel, Powerpoint and PDF which i believe is pretty nice for such a small phone, which doesn’t even cost too much.

Nokia C5 Specs

Price and Final Words:

The phone is equipped with every possible thing, which an average to an expert user want in their phones. It has a sleek look to it, nice design and size and light weight. I would like to think that E5, which we covered here Nokia E5 Review is probably slightly more rich in functions, but C5 is certainly competitively usable and costs way less than E5. Nokia C5 can be purchased for about $150 to $170 USD. This price could vary depending which part of world you live in. Finally, i would like to urge you folks to let us know whether you find this phone good and will you recommend it to others? if not, then why not?

Broadband for everyone

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 07:29 AM PDT

What is Broadband Internet?

Broadband Internet‘ or just ‘Broadband‘ is a high speed internet access. It is much faster than the dial-up connection.

Dial-up connection is Internet access through Public Switched Telephone Networks. The word ‘Broadband’ consists of two words ‘Broad’ and ‘Band’. Broad means wide and band means a group of frequencies. Therefore, Broadband means wide range of frequencies. As broadband uses wide range of frequencies, it is much faster than the dial-up way of connecting.

Pictorial view of Broadband

The above portrays a clear picture of broadband connection.

Setting up a Broadband connection :

Broadband offers you a fast way to connect to the internet. It is ideal for medium and high level users. Example: Users who want to watch TV online, play multi-player games or carry out other online activities.

Setting up a broadband connection is very easy.

The following are few steps that are to be followed to setup a broadband connection :

1. Select your broadband package

In order to choose the proper broadband package, it is necessary to check a few things. Checking the following will aid in the process of selecting the broadband package :

* Broadband coverage in your area.

* The Internet transfer speed.

* The download limit.

The broadband coverage can be checked by visiting the ISP’s (Internet Service           Provider’s website). The ISP is the one who offers you the connection.

The transfer speed can also be checked by researching each of the packages.      If you want to watch movies, play online, then a 4MB package can serve the     purpose. A 4MB package is one which offers speed that is 80 times faster than        dial-up connection.

The availability and price also play a vital role in selecting your broadband       package. So check the availability and compare prices of packages from different   providers. Choose the package that best suits you. Once selected, you can contact the supplier and sign up for a connection.

2. Device

A router or a modem is required to connect the computer to the broadband service            Look out for suppliers who offer free routers or modems.

3. Setting Up

After having signed up you will have to arrange a date for an engineer to come to           your place who will do the needful.

Broadband in Detail

Broadband is usually called high speed access to the Internet because it has a high rate of data transmission. Any connection given to the customer that is 256 Kbits/s or more is generally considered as broadband internet.

Broadband Definitions given by ITU and OECD

  • The International Telecommunication Union Standardization sector (ITU-T) has defined broadband as a transmission capacity that is faster than the primary rate of ISDN(Integrated Services Digital Network), at 1.5 to 2 Mbits/s.
  • The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) has defined broadband as ‘speed of 256 Kbits/s in one direction’. It is the most common baseline that is used to market broadband around the world.

There is no specific bit rate defined by the industry and hence broadband can mean lower bit rate transmission methods also.

In reality, the advertised bandwidth is not always available to the customer or the user. This is because the ISPs allow a greater number of subscribers under the assumption that most users will not be using the full connection capacity very often.

As and as the bandwidth that is delivered to the user increases, there is an expectation that the ‘video on demand’ services will become more popular. At present the data rates on most broadband services are not sufficient to provide good quality video. However, there is a gradual increase in the bandwidth and  the data rates. Increased bandwidth is evident from the fact that postings have grown from small JPEG files to large video files.

Types of Broadband Internet Connection :

There are several types of broadband internet connections available. Each have their own advantages. So it is better to know what are the types of connections and their advantages before you choose the package. There are three main types of broadband internet connection, they are :

  1. Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL)
  2. Cable
  3. Mobile Broadband

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL)

This is one of the most common forms and is available everywhere unless      you live in a very remote area. With ADSL, Internet can be connected through existing phone lines using a modem or router and you will still be able to make or          receive calls while you are using the the internet. This is possible with the help of        micro-filters provided by the ISP. ADSL is cheap and easy to install.

Cable Internet

Cable Internet is a form of broadband internet access that uses Cable   Television(CATV) infrastructure.

It is also a common form but it’s not available as widely available as       ADSL. Cable type of connection service can be accessed when you live in large   residential area. Cable offers the same service as that of the ADSL and the cost    difference is very minimum.

Mobile Broadband

Mobile broadband is a form of internet access meant for people living in       remote and isolated rural areas where ADSL and Cable are not  available. Mobile broadband does not require telephone lines because it follows the antenna which    will send a signal to the connection point in the computer to access the internet.   Mobile broadband can be used on the go until there is coverage.

Broadband Technologies :

The standard broadband technologies in most of the regions are cable internet and ADSL. Newer technologies include fibre-optic communication, which enables broadband internet access by transmitting information over large distances much more cost-effective than the copper wire technology.

In areas where there is no cable internet and ADSL, organizations have started to install Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) networks, which is wireless internet within a range. The range where internet is available is called the hotspot.

The newest technology being deployed is the WiMAX, which is Wi-Fi with a coverage and QoS (Quality of Service) of cellular networks.

The following is a list of some broadband technologies :

  1. ADSL
  2. SDSL (Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line – offers symmetric bandwidth. It is considered the opposite of ADSL)
  3. Multilinking Modems
  4. Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN)
  5. Wired Ethernet
  6. Cellular Broadband
  7. Power-Line internet

Broadband Access Worldwide

To reduce gap between people in accessing digital technologies, known as the digital divide, promotion is being done in order to make broadband connection available worldwide.

The above stats clearly show that the broadband internet users have increased in number due to the promotion activity being carried out to make broadband internet available worldwide.

Future Broadband

The future broadband world depends upon the successful implementation and maintenance of technologies like the BDR (Bonded DSL Rings), HSPDA (High-Speed Down-link Packet Access), etc. BDR gives speed up to 400 Mbits/s and the installation costs are 20 times lesser than that of optical fibre.

HSPDA is an enhanced third generation (3G) mobile communication protocol which allows UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System) to have higher transfer speeds and capacity. It currently supports down-link speeds of 1.8, 3.6, 7.2 and 14.0 Mbits/s.

There are also some other future broadband implementations that show that the future of broadband is going to be flamboyant.

Facebook beats Orkut in India

Posted: 26 Aug 2010 07:25 AM PDT

Orkut, the social networking site of Google is popular in India and Brazil only. Now Orkut lost its domination in India also. As per the report of Comscore-(A leading web market analyzing company). With 20.9 million visitors Facebook snatched the number one social network position from Orkut in India. Facebook achieved this position with 179% increase of traffic within one year. It is a great achievement for Facebook because now India ranks the seventh largest market worldwide for social networking, after the U.S., China, Germany, Russian Federation, Brazil and the U.K.  Growing broadband penetration and 3G syndrome can skyrocket the figures shortly.

Flexible website integration options and the concept of Fan pages make Facebook the favorite of webmasters. One of the main complaints against Orkut is its amateur look. Understanding the same, Orkut has done some recent polishes but which couldn't create a buzz across social network world. Orkut changed Scrap settings also to improve privacy and security.

Addictive Games like FarmVille and a huge collection of applications significantly contributed the Facebook escalation. It is interesting to see that with this facebook application you can bring your Orkut profile within Facebook, means can share your Orkut Profile, Photos, Scraps with your Facebook friends! You need not to provide the Orkut login id or password. Simple Orkut profile URL is sufficient.

HP is changing its bug fixing policy

Posted: 24 Aug 2010 07:25 PM PDT

Although HP is one of the greatest manufacturers today, HP still faces all sorts of security flaws just like other major manufacturers and developers on the market. Manufacturers usually share their new found vulnerabilities with public, but that's not always a good idea because when vulnerability is publicly disclosed it can attract all sorts of malicious users that want to exploit it. This is the main reason many companies are having zero-day vulnerability policy because that's the safest way to work on and to fix the security flaws with its products. As you might know, HP offers paid bounty to all independent security researchers that manage to discover these zero-day vulnerabilities. Although this zero-day vulnerability policy has been working well for the past five years HP has decided to change its terms because some vendors aren't fixing their flaws on time.

Aaron Portnoy, HP's manager of security research says that HP has always been supportive of nondisclosure policy because that the simplest way to hide security flaws from hackers and other malicious users that want to exploit them. That way security flaws are being kept in secret from the public until the vendors fix them. This was a good way to keep its products safe from hackers but it also takes a lot of time to fix the flaws because vendors could easily make their own time frames that way. Some developers have been working on their flaws for years and HP has decided to put some pressure on them, therefore each vendor will have a specific time frame to fix the security flaws with its products. That time frame will last for six months and if vendors fail to fix the flaws by that time, the flaws would be disclosed publicly. This improved zero-day vulnerability policy sounds promising, but we'll have to wait in order to see how it works in practice.

Microsoft Adaptive Keyboard adapts to your user interface and applications

Posted: 21 Aug 2010 09:13 PM PDT

Over the years, Microsoft has been known for its software solutions and one of the most popular products from Microsoft is its operating system Windows. Windows is one of the most used operating systems today so it's no wonder that Windows is one of the Microsoft's best selling products. Besides software, Microsoft is working on all sorts of other devices as well. Microsoft has released its gaming console Xbox that has achieved great success and Xbox 360 followed it. Recently, Microsoft has started working on smartphones, and we're waiting with anticipation for Windows 7 Phone. Besides all those great products Microsoft still finds time to surprise us with new and revolutionary products. This time, Microsoft is working on a first adjustable keyboard that automatically adapts to your user interface.

Microsoft Adaptive Keyboard is still a concept that should bring more dynamic to input devices. Although it's still a concept, Microsoft has released a prototype that shows us some interesting features. Microsoft Adaptive Keyboard is a simple keyboard that has touchscreen display underneath it and a touch display area above the key region. For example, if you're on your desktop the touch display will show you the thumbnails of your recent documents and applications and you can simply slide through them with your finger and with a single tap of a finger you can open your recent document that way. After you've opened your application, for example PowerPoint, you'll see that the touch display has changed and that it shows different slides of your presentation through which you can navigate with a single swipe of your finger. Interesting is that you keyboard layout changes depending on your application as well so if you're using PowePoint you'll keyboard buttons will change to all objects that you can insert into your presentation, so there's no need to use your mouse. Of course, if you're in a different part of application your keyboard buttons will change to it accordingly.
Microsoft Adaptive Keyboard looks interesting enough but so far it's only a prototype but we're hoping that we'll see this device in stores someday.

iPhone 4 Carrier Wars Are Inevitable

Posted: 20 Aug 2010 09:00 PM PDT

You won’t hear the end of it anytime soon. Lets face it, Apple is leading the way with it’s products, namely the iPhone 4(despite antenna issues). Apple was quick to resolve the issue with a free iPhone 4 bumper case which got mixed reactions from consumers and the media. Either way, Apple received a ton of press and it seems as though that trend will continue due to the fact that Apple will finally be freed of it’s exclusivity contract with AT&T. Rumors continue to fly wildly about what Apple will do next, some stories so outlandish that it seems only for the purpose of attention and to exploit a hot topic.

Common sense points to Verizon Wireless as the next iPhone and iPad carrier. What about AT&T though? Obviously the iPhone 4 will stay as they have a huge customer base already but the issue of pricing arises. AT&T subsidizes for the iPhone 4 and with good cause, they have exclusivity. When Verizon or maybe even Sprint get a hold of the iPhone 4, it will inevitably be an all out war to offer customers the best price.

If Verizon announces a better price and better plan than AT&T has, it will be more than enough reason for many AT&T customers to jump ship and swim on over to Verizon, especially as AT&T has had somewhat poor coverage and Verizon Wireless heavily promotes it’s wide coverage area.
